Kinabatangan River is a low-lying wilderness covered by a patchwork of natural rainforest and ever-encroaching oil-palm plantations. The whole area is dotted with oxbow lakes and limestone outcrops and is home to a wealth of wildlife including our first wild Orang-utans and the remarkable endemic Proboscis Monkey. Our focus will, however, be on the birdlife and there is much to look for including Storm’s stork (Kinabatangan River represents one of the most reliable sites for this endangered species anywhere). Borneon Ground-Cuckoo(rare endemic to Borneo), Hooded Pittas, Black-Crowned Pittas, Trogons, Stork-billed, Blue-eared and Oriental Dwarf Kingfishers, Wallace’s Hawk-eagle, White-bellied Sea Eagle, Lesser Fish Eagle, Malkohas Borneon Falconet(the smallest raptor in the world with its superb mini size of 14cm/a Borneo endemic which is only found in Sabah), Oriental Darter, Purple Heron, Rhinoceros Hornbill, Helmeted Hornbill, Asian Black Hornbill, Oriental Pied Hornbill, Bushy-crested Hornbill, Wreathed Hornbill and wrinkled Hornbill. Of course, there are many smaller birds as well, such as Malaysian Blue Flycatcher,Babblers, Broadbills, Sunbirds, Spiderhunters, Leafbirds, Flowerpeckers and many more.SABAH is one of the Thirteen states in Malaysia and it is located in the north of the third-largest island in world-Borneo Island. Kinabatangan River And Rainforest Discovery Centre Birds Photography is a tour that brought to you a different birding experience from the floodplain of the Lower Kinabatangan River to the submontane rainforest in RDC.
While Rainforest Discovery Centre is a lowland to submontane(hill) primary rainforest with impressive solid canopy walkway and forest trails. Highlight may include Borneon Bristlehead(world only 1 species, unique endemic to Borneo), Black-crowned Pitta(known as Black and Crimson Pitta, a Borneo endemic which is only found in Sabah), Rufous-collared Kingfisher, Rufous-backed Kingfisher, Blue-throated and Red-bearded Bee-eater, Hornbills, Diard’s, Red-naped and Scarlet-rumped Trogons, Buff-rumped and Buff-necked Woodpeckers, Black and Red and Black and yellow Broadbills, Grey-rumped Treeswift, Oriolo, Black Magpie, Greater Racquet-tailed Drongo, Great Slaty Woodpecker(the largest woodpecker) and Rufous Piculet(the smallest woodpecker).A lot of woodpeckers, Bulbuls, barbets, Minivels and Spiderhunters
